3D printers are going to become some of the most forensically investigated technology all thanks to ghost guns that some people are printing out.
Researchers in the down under investigated whether or not they could identify a 3D Printer simply based off of the print that they were supplied with so they can aid with investigations in criminal events.
And they had really accurate results of identifying 26 out of 28 printers when they were sourced with regular, basic PLA filament.
The plastic that’s printed out carries specific structures because of its thermal history from a specific printer which lets it be accurately connected.
Other filaments like ABS or PETG don’t carry the same signatures, so this method can’t be used if the printer used those.
