Why do mechanics manually punch out the holes in high-performance brake rotors?! 🏎️🔧
If you look at the brakes on a supercar like a Porsche GT3, you will notice the massive brake discs are covered in tiny holes. These are called "cross-drilled rotors." When you brake from high speeds, the intense friction creates a massive layer of hot gas between the pad and the metal. These holes allow that gas to vent, keeping the brakes cool and preventing "brake fade."
However, if you drive the car hard on a race track, the heavy carbon dust from the brake pads will eventually pack into those holes like cement! If the holes get clogged, the heat cannot escape, which can literally cause a $10,000 set of carbon-ceramic rotors to crack in half! To prevent this, mechanics use a simple punch tool to manually pop out the baked-on debris during routine maintenance!
