Should you put grease on your wheel spacers before installing them?! 🛑🔧
Wheel spacers are a popular aftermarket modification used to push the wheels further outward, giving a car a wider, more aggressive stance. However, because most wheel spacers are made of aluminum and your car's wheel hub is made of steel, moisture and road salt can cause "galvanic corrosion." This chemical reaction essentially rust-welds the spacer to the car, making it impossible to remove without a sledgehammer!
To prevent this, some DIY mechanics coat the entire spacer in a thick layer of grease or anti-seize. But this is highly controversial! A car's wheel relies on the raw friction between the dry metal surfaces to stay clamped in place. If you lubricate that gap, all the braking and accelerating forces are transferred directly to the thin metal wheel studs, which can cause them to violently snap off while driving!
