Why Flowing Liquid Looks Frozen In Time

When this guy cuts open a bag of molasses, it pours out looking like it's completely frozen in time. You might think this is fake, but it's actually flowing the entire time. This is called laminar flow, and it happens when a liquid leaves a container at a low enough speed without anything disrupting it, so every layer of the liquid moves in perfectly parallel lines with no turbulence at all. The moment you stick your finger into the stream, you can see it's obviously moving. But pull your hand away and it goes right back to looking completely still, even though it never stopped pouring.
