In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, join the Johns Hopkins School of Education for an inspiring panel discussion exploring the experiences, challenges, and opportunities facing Latino/a students and educators. Drawing on their personal journeys and professional expertise, panelists Katie Caster, Rudy Ruiz, and Erwin Hesse examine the importance of expanding access to higher education, increasing Latino/a representation in the teaching profession, and creating meaningful pathways for student and educator success.

Through stories of perseverance, mentorship, and advocacy, discover how educators and institutions can break down barriers, recognize the strengths of multilingual and multicultural communities, and foster environments where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Moderated by Johns Hopkins School of Education doctoral students Francheska Rodriguez and Jennifer Villafuerte, this conversation highlights the transformative power of education—and the lasting impact of educators who help others recognize their potential.

About the Speakers:

Katie Caster is the Director of Teaching Well at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education and a doctoral student researching mentorship pairs and Latina identity.

Dr. Rudy Ruiz is a Johns Hopkins EdD alumnus and the founder of Edifying Teachers, an initiative focusing on culturally sustaining mentorship for underrepresented educators.

Dr. Erwin Hesse is a Johns Hopkins EdD alumnus and the founder of Admissions Gambit. As a first-generation American, he successfully advocated for Maryland's direct college admissions law to remove barriers for high school seniors.

Francheska Rodriguez is a doctoral student at the Johns Hopkins School of Education and a founding assistant principal leading a dual language program.

Jennifer Villafuerte is an EdD student at Johns Hopkins, an adjunct professor, and the co-founder of Alcanzar, a nonprofit supporting the New Jersey immigrant community.
