Nick Bostrom argues that humanity is approaching a future where superintelligent AI could solve almost every practical problem.
If machines take over most human labor, work may no longer be necessary for survival or income.
But a world without necessary work does not mean a world without purpose.
People may still find meaning in learning, creating, playing, achieving, and loving.
Bostrom calls this condition “deep redundancy,” where we choose activities even when machines can do them better.
He says humans should have broad freedom to decide what kind of life they want to pursue.
Even artificially created challenges could still provide genuine enjoyment and a sense of achievement.
He also imagines humans gradually transforming into “posthuman” beings through enhancement.
Rather than rushing toward an ideal state, he suggests following an “optimal trajectory” of gradual development.
For now, he says, we should focus on the immediate technical and political challenges on the path to that future.
