서균한은 최씨무인정권 아래에서 군인의 길을 걸으며 야별초지유와 견룡행수를 겸했다. 1258년 3월, 김준과 유경이 주도한 정변에서 삼별초를 사청에 결집시키는 핵심 임무를 맡았다. "최의가 이미 죽었다"는 한마디로 병력을 움직인 순간, 최씨 무인정권은 종말을 맞았다. 그는 그 공로로 위사보좌공신에 책록되었다.

In 1258, near the end of the military regime in Goryeo, a coup known as the Mu-o Coup brought down the Choe military government. One man played a decisive role in this turning point, yet his name has largely faded from history: Senior General Seo Gyun-han (徐均漢).

This book begins with the fragmentary records preserved in the Goryeosa, in the biography of Kim Jun, and in the document known as the Sangseo Dogwancheop, included in the Mung-hwa Yu Clan Genealogical Record. By examining these scattered references within the broader historical context, it seeks to reconstruct Seo Gyun-han's activities and illuminate the final years of Goryeo's military dictatorship.

Serving under the Choe military regime, Seo rose through the ranks and held the positions of Commander of the Night Patrol Unit and Chief of the Royal Guard. In March 1258, during the coup led by Kim Jun and Yu Gyeong, he carried out a crucial mission: assembling the Sambyeolcho troops at the Sa-cheong. The announcement that "Choe Ui is already dead" set the soldiers in motion and triggered the downfall of a military government that had ruled for four generations over approximately six decades. For his contribution, Seo Gyun-han was awarded the distinction of Wisa Bojwa Gongsin, a meritorious defender of the royal house.

He reappeared in the turbulent year of 1270, during the return of the Goryeo capital to Gaegyeong. As a senior general, he was ordered by a Mongol prince to open the Ganghwa granary and provide relief to the people.

The second part of this book looks beyond Seo Gyun-han himself to explore the origins and branches of the Icheon Seo clan. From Seo Shin-il, an official of late Unified Silla, through Seo Pil, Seo Hui, and Seo Nul, the family developed into one of Goryeo's distinguished aristocratic lineages, producing high-ranking ministers across seven successive generations.

The book also explores the legend of the grateful deer at Hyoyang Mountain, Seo Hui's celebrated diplomatic achievement against the Khitan, and the genealogical branches associated with Dalseong, Yeonsan, Buyeo, and Namyang Dangseong.

History is shaped not only by celebrated heroes, but also by those whose names barely survive in the records, despite having fulfilled decisive duties at critical moments.
