Terence Crawford stepped into the ring against one of the best available challengers in Raymundo Beltran, a fighter who had already built a reputation as a rugged and dangerous lightweight. Beltran was also coming off a controversial draw against Ricky Burns in September 2013, a result that many felt had denied him the very same lightweight title he was now chasing.

Beltran (29-7-1, 17 KOs), a native of Mexico, brought plenty of experience into the showdown, including years as Manny Pacquiao’s chief sparring partner. He had the size, toughness, and physical strength to make life difficult for Crawford and was expected to provide a serious test. Crawford, meanwhile, was riding the momentum of an exciting stoppage over former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa just months earlier.

But Crawford turned the supposed challenge into another showcase of his elite skills.

The problem wasn’t that Beltran failed to bring the fight—it was that Crawford proved to be far more complete than anyone expected. Crawford constantly switched stances, changing the look of the fight while using his piston-like jab to control the distance and outbox Beltran.

And whenever Beltran managed to land a hard shot, Crawford responded with authority.

Instead of backing away from adversity, Crawford answered with sudden bursts of clean, punishing counterpunches. Beltran could land one hard shot, but Crawford would immediately fire back with combinations that reminded everyone who was controlling the fight.

In front of a packed crowd of 11,127 at the CenturyLink Center in Crawford’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, the hometown star completely dictated the fight from start to finish.

Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs) walked away with a dominant unanimous-decision victory, sweeping the official scorecards **119-109, 119-109, and 120-108**. ESPN.com scored it even wider at **120-108 for Crawford**.

Beltran came in with experience, toughness, and the belief that he could finally capture the lightweight crown. Crawford left the ring having delivered a statement of his own: **the challenge wasn’t too big for Crawford—the problem was that Crawford was simply too good.**
