Only building skeletons left: China chasing 72-hour golden window to rescue mudslide-hit border port

As the critical 72-hour golden window closes, a massive search and rescue operation is intensifying in Gyirong County, Xizang, following Wednesday’s devastating mudslide. Officials confirm that seven people have died and 554 remain missing. The disaster, which originated on the Nepalese side of the border, buried core port infrastructure and destroyed the main road, G216, severely hampering initial relief efforts. Professional rescue teams, numbering over 2,141 personnel and nearly 4,000 sets of equipment, have been mobilized, with first-response units reaching the core zone via multiple routes.

Engineering crews are battling to reopen critical access roads, facing the challenge of a riverbed elevated by debris and an unstable upstream barrier lake. Drones are delivering essential supplies to stranded rescuers, and LiDAR technology is being used to monitor for secondary hazards. Meanwhile, in a swift effort to secure local communities, all 499 residents from affected villages have been safely evacuated to temporary shelters. Relief materials, including food, water, and warm bedding, are being distributed to ensure basic needs are met as the multi-force rescue operation continues around the clock.
