The world's largest radio telescope has entered its peak phase of construction and is moving toward first major scientific tests, announced SKA Observatory Director-General Professor Jessica Dempsey during a visit to Shanghai last weekend. Known as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the €2 billion mega-project is a global effort spanning 16 countries, including China, South Africa, UK and Australia.
Unlike normal telescopes that look for light, radio telescopes listen for radio waves. Splitting its operations between remote sites in Western Australia and South Africa to avoid interference from human technology like mobile phones and Wi-Fi, the SKA acts like a giant radio for Earth, tuned in to faint cosmic radio waves.
Once complete by 2030, the telescope will generate a massive 700 petabytes of raw data every year, equivalent to about 230 million HD movies. No single computer can handle this; instead, the data will be shared across a global network of supercomputing hubs.
A center in Shanghai, China, recently successfully linked to this network, joining nodes in the UK, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden. Scientists expect to start working with real data by next year.
It will perform the most precise tests of Einstein's theories, detecting gravitational waves from colliding black holes, and even search for extra-terrestrials.
