NEW! Sports & Leisure History Look-Back for the week of September 7, 2026. Topics include:

A. On of the biggest "what if's" in #MLB history -- Dwight Gooden of the #Mets threw his 246th strikeout of the season on September 12, 1984, breaking the rookie single-season record set by Herb Score in 1955. Doc Gooden would end up with 276 K's on the season -- a record that still stands.

B. On September 7, 1923, #RedSox pitcher Howard Ehmke threw a no hitter, though he only struck out one batter. Not your typical no-no. Ehmke, one of the more interesting players in #MLB history, who also invented the tarp used to cover infields during rain.

C. A couple international heroes for their respective countries, but who passed at far too young an age. First, On September 8, 1963, #RafaelOsuna of #Mexico defeated Frank Froehling of the #UnitedStates at the US National Tennis Championship (now known as the #USOpen). It was his first Grand Slam and only one won by someone from Mexico. #Osuna passed at age 30 when he was tragically killed in a plane crash. And, on September 10, 1960, in one of the most famous #Olympics events -- the #marathon in #Rome -- #AbebeBikila of #Ethiopia set a #WorldRecord by running barefoot through the streets. It was the first medal not only for #Abebe 's country, but for all of Sub-Saharan #Africa. #Bikila passed at age 41 from complications stemming from a car accident.

D. A trailblazer. On September 11, 1988, #DougWilliams of the Washington #Redskins (now known as the #Commanders) beat the #Steelers in his first game since winning #SuperBowl XXII and being named #MVP -- the first #AfricanAmerican #quarterback in the history of the #NFL to start a Super Bowl.

E. On September 13, 1998, one of the most iconic #NFL duos, #JohnElway and #TerrellDavis, beat the #Cowboys. Both put up stellar performances en route to winning the #SuperBowl that year and Davis being named #MVP.

F. Look away #JoeMontana and #NotreDame fans. On September 9, 1978, #Montana and the #FightingIrish suffered one of the biggest upsets in school and #collegefootball history, with Joe having one of his worst games in both #NCAAfootball and the #NFL. An unranked #Mizzou beat No. 5 Notre Dame 3-0 on the road in #SouthBend.
