Seo Yu-gu (徐有榘, 1764–1845), known by his pen name Pungseok (楓石), was a prominent scholar and government official of late Joseon Korea.

Born into the distinguished Daegu Seo family and favored by King Jeongjo, he seemed destined for a brilliant political career. But a political disaster suddenly transformed him into the nephew of a condemned man, forcing him into eighteen years of secluded life.

Away from the center of power, he returned to the soil, planted seeds, observed nature, and continued his studies. After eventually returning to government service, he devoted his lifetime of knowledge and experience to completing the monumental Imwon Gyeongjeji (林園經濟志), an encyclopedic work comprising 113 volumes.

This novel follows his journey from privilege to downfall, from exile to recovery, and ultimately from the world of political power to the world of learning and practical life.

At its heart is the story of a scholar who found his greatest work not at the center of power, but in the quiet world of the Imwon, the countryside and garden.
