What can a small island nation reveal about oil, power and the legacy of colonialism?
As an anthropologist of the Caribbean at the University of Chicago, Ryan Cecil Jobson argues that small places hold big insights. His book The Petro-state Masquerade: Oil, Sovereignty, and Power in Trinidad and Tobago explores the relationship between fossil fuel extraction, political power, and post-colonial national identity.
Jobson also follows in the tradition of the late UChicago anthropologist Michel-Rolph Trouillot— a professor, musician, Haitian, and political dissident—whose field-shaping work moved the Caribbean from the margins to the global center stage.
For the first time, Trouillot’s papers and archives are on public display in an exhibition co-curated by Jobson. “History on the Edges: Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Caribbean” is on view at the Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center Gallery at the Regenstein Library through Aug. 21, 2026.
