What’s the point of university strategies? | Shân Wareing | TEDxMiddlesex University Mauritius

Professor Shân Wareing shares an engaging perspective on why strategies are often misunderstood, arguing that while bad strategies can create confusion and stagnation, good strategies have the power to drive meaningful transformation. Using examples from higher education, she explores how organisations must adapt to change while staying focused on long-term goals and financial sustainability. The talk highlights the importance of aligning people, resources, and priorities around a shared vision rather than creating unrealistic wish lists. Professor Shân Wareing took up her position as the Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University in April 2024. She is Chair of the charity, Unite Foundation, Chair of Advance-HE’s Leadership and Management Strategic Advisory Group, and Co-Chair of the Advance HE Leadership Framework Steering Group. She has published in the fields of linguistics, equality, diversity and inclusion, leadership and team development, and learning and teaching in higher education. Her current scholarly interests are university leadership and governance from the perspective of diversity and inclusion, digital transformation, and higher education policy.
