Did you know Joseon had carpets too?
Royalty used two forms — the mat-style "hwamunseok" and
rug-style "joseoncheol." Meet the artisans reviving both today.

Park Yoon-hwanHwamunseok is a hand-woven sedge mat with floral or geometric patterns. Park Yoon-hwan carries on this craft as a second-generation artisan.

He handles it all — growing the sedge, making it, selling it, caring for it.
Now he's expanding into everyday pieces like tea coasters and table mats.

At LOFA SEOUL's RE:WEAVE/LEGACY exhibition, hwamunseok gets a modern twist — woven in pixel-style graphics instead of traditional patterns.

Seong Young-Eun | @and-et
Joseoncheol — "the carpet of Joseon" — was woven with animal hair or painted with ink and pigment, tapestry-style. Seong Young-Eun reinterprets it through tufting.

Seong Young-Eun started with weaving, and now runs fiber art brand And-et — leading the tufting scene at home and abroad.

Seong Young-Eun's joseoncheol piece earned a special selection at the 53rd Gyeonggi-do Crafts Grand Exhibition.
