The U.S. has intensified pressure on India and China over their purchases of Russian oil, with Senator Richard Blumenthal directly telling both countries to “buy your oil and gas somewhere else.” The U.S. Russia-sanctions legislation gives the President authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on qualifying major buyers of Russian energy.

Meanwhile, India continues to emphasize energy security and its right to source oil based on its national interests and market conditions, while India–Russia trade and energy ties remain significant.
