AI 시대, 전력은 충분한가 GGGI ‘AI-에너지 넥서스’ 포럼

As artificial intelligence expands rapidly, so does the amount of energy needed to power it.
At a global forum hosted by the Global Green Growth Institute in Busan on Wednesday, technology, energy, and climate leaders discussed how to meet growing AI demand without undermining climate goals.
Our Chung Hye-lim reports.

The Global Green Growth Institute and the International Energy Agency are coming together to address one of the emerging challenges of the AI era: how to support rapid technological growth without hurting climate goals.
At the World Climate Industry EXPO at Korea's port city of Busan on Wednesday, the two organizations signed a strategic memorandum of understanding aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy.
"Now we are going to formalize this already very strong relationship and put it in a framework. () So this is a great privilege for me and for the International Agency to sign this MOU with GGGI.."
"So we will work together, and especially AI will require a lot of energy, water, land, and infrastructure, not to mention trillion-dollar investment. But without clean, reliable and affordable energy, AI cannot be sustained."
Kim said the AI-focused future the GGGI is working toward should be safe, inclusive, and sustainable.
The issue is becoming more urgent as AI infrastructure, including data centers and semiconductor manufacturing, requires growing amounts of electricity.
That was the focus of an afternoon forum hosted by GGGI, bringing together Google and other technology, energy, and climate leaders.
For South Korea, access to clean energy is also becoming an industrial issue.
"Korea's semiconductor industry is at the absolute center of our global AI supply chain In the AI era, access to cost-effective clean energy has transitioned from an environmental milestone into an essential prerequisite for Korea's industrial competitiveness, national energy security and market leadership."
Google says the company is investing in cleaner energy while improving the efficiency of its data centers, chips, and AI models.
At the same time, the company says AI itself can help expand renewable energy, make better use of existing power grids, and improve forecasts of electricity supply and demand.
The discussion later continued in a session led by The Economist, bringing together GGGI, Google, HSBC, and climate experts to examine what the growth of AI means for energy demand, investment, and climate policy.

"As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important part of the global economy, the discussion is shifting from how fast AI can grow, to how that growth can continue sustainably.
