Today's summit extended into the business stage. President Lee Jae-myung and five Central Asian counterparts took part in the Korea-Central Asia Business Summit, the first economic gathering of its kind since ties with the region began more than three decades ago.
Our Baek Ju-hee has details.

At the Korea-Central Asia Business Summit on Wednesday, trade, critical minerals and infrastructure took center stage as Korea and its five Central Asian partners sought to translate diplomatic ties into concrete economic cooperation.

"If we walk this path together, the road that connected us 1,500 years ago will open again, as a new beautiful Silk Road."

President Lee Jae Myung called for expanding trade into consumer goods, bio and digital industries, backed by a new digital customs system to lower non-tariff barriers. Also, "Korea Desks" will be established across the five Central Asian countries to help companies resolve problems on the ground.

Central Asia's lithium and uranium reserves emerged as a natural fit for Korea's battery and semiconductor industries, with the two seen as capable of leading the global market together.
Cooperation across the entire supply chain also came up on the agenda, backed by joint "Rare Metals Centers" planned for the region to support research and workforce training.

Infrastructure was another key agenda, with Central Asia's young, fast-growing population and its expanding plans to modernize city development, high-speed rail, plants and power grids drawing attention.

Central Asian leaders echoed calls for deeper regional connectivity to support these agendas.

"Strengthening connectivity across Central Asia will fully unlock the region's economic potential, create new opportunities for international business, and give additional momentum to large-scale joint projects."

Korea's business community backed the push.
Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Chey Tae-won announced a joint declaration, with companies signing 19 MOUs spanning minerals, smart cities and infrastructure, including a Hyundai Motor smart-city deal in Kazakhstan.

With around 5-hundred-20 government officials and business leaders in attendance, including more than 1-hundred Korean firms, a matchmaking session on the sidelines produced over 2-hundred meetings, yielding some 14 million U.S. dollars in contracts on the spot.
