Martino Stierli explains one of the most powerful concepts for cultural, economic and political emancipation in Francophone Western Africa: Negritude. For Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor, negritude encompassed values of African civilization that greatly influenced post-colonial thought and the architecture of buildings built in the post-independence period.
This is a clip from the lecture “Asymmetric Parallelism: Architecture and Politics in Senghor’s Senegal” by Martino Stierli of MoMA, as part of the JCB Memorial Lecture Series, hosted by the the JNBC at Brown University, in March, 2026. Mr. Stierli reported on some of the research towards the exhibition "Architects of Liberation: Modernism in West Africa," which opens at MoMA July 5, 2026.
Curated by History of Art and Architecture Professor Dietrich Neumann, the J. Carter Brown Memorial Lecture Series features contemporary architects from across the country and their work.
