Seattle Is Sitting on a Fault That Could Destroy the City

Seattle may be sitting on top of a ticking geological time bomb. Beneath the city lies a hidden network of active faults capable of producing powerful earthquakes, triggering tsunamis, and causing widespread destruction. Scientists studying ancient shorelines and layers of sediment have uncovered evidence of past seismic events that reveal a more complicated threat than anyone once expected. And the biggest surprise? The most frequent danger may not come from the massive fault everyone knows about, but from smaller, hidden fractures beneath the region. Seattle isn't the only city facing this kind of threat. From California and Turkey to Indonesia and Japan, enormous fault systems are quietly storing energy beneath some of the world's most populated areas. How much warning would we have before the ground starts moving?
