Something Massive Is Tearing Iceland Apart Right Now

Iceland is slowly splitting apart as powerful tectonic forces pull the island in opposite directions, opening cracks in the ground and reshaping its landscape. Across the country, enormous fissures and volcanic zones reveal what happens when two massive sections of Earth's crust move away from each other. The process is happening right now, driven by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. In some areas, the ground has fractured, roads have been damaged, and volcanic eruptions have shown just how restless the land beneath Iceland can be. Scientists can monitor these changes and sometimes warn communities, but they cannot stop the forces that are literally pulling the island apart.
