Shrimp, crab, rock prawn, and flower shrimp, which were caught in abundance in the waters off Jukbyeon Port in Uljin-gun, South Korea.
In the waters off Jukbyeon Port in Uljin County, South Korea,
until the 1980s and 2010s,
a well-established white snail fishing ground existed in the waters 100-500 meters deep off Jukbyeon Port. Wooden boats from Jukbyeon Port, as well as numerous fishing boats from Ayajin and Jumunjin Ports in southern Gangwon Province,
had moored themselves in Jukbyeon Port and operated their fishing operations. At that time, the main catch was white snails. If white snails and shrimp were caught together in a trap,
while the white snails were being removed, the additional rock lobsters (head lobsters) and flower lobsters would prick the hands.
Shrimp was a major nuisance to fishermen. Back then, white snails were auctioned in large quantities at the Jukbyeon Port fish market, piling up in heaps.
Three to four 5-ton trucks would haul out white snails each day. It was the golden age of the white snail.
Also, at that time, there were no buyers, no merchants, and no outlets for shrimp. Fishermen I knew would either bring large quantities to a few households to eat, or simply throw them into the sea.
About 70 years ago, around 1955, when I was a child, we caught a lot of shrimp off the coast of Osan, Wonnam-myeon, Uljin-gun. I remember the shrimp and the sea snails were very large back then. The grandmother of the house across the street, the paulownia tree house, would buy only shrimp (sea snails) in the shed and gather them in large quantities.
A Japanese merchant would come and take them for export. At that time, when I was playing in the yard with my friends, if my grandmother was away,
I would run away with one or two shrimps. If I was caught, the grandmother, wearing a hempen hat, would climb on my head and urinate on me.
Back then, my friends and I were most afraid of anything that peed under a snail. Snow crabs were also huge back then, and the king crab, which resembled a Russian king crab, was a sight to behold. I was as young as a child.
At that time, king crabs and hairy crabs (straw shoe crabs) were caught in abundance.
Especially, until the 1980s, when trawl nets were pulled in small wooden boats to catch flatfish,
king crabs called "butungge" (short for "butung crab") would get caught in large numbers in the nets. When trying to pull them out by hand, the crab spines would prick your hands,
so you'd have to cut the trawl net with a knife and throw the crabs away.
Nowadays, one or two crabs are occasionally caught in the nets near Wangdolamjam, selling for over 150,000 won.
Wangdolcho, Wangdolamjam, Wangdoljam, off the coast of Gusan, Pyeonghae-myeon, Uljin-gun
After it was first discovered (older fishermen had known about it for a long time),
it became known as a snow crab fishing ground in Uljin.
Older fishermen said that the Wangdolcho stems continued to extend northeast to Ulleungdo Island.
Most of those who can attest to this claim are either old or retired fishermen.
Fisherman Hyeonjong We created a website to sell prawns, (Doha shrimp), rock prawns, (Parkchigi), and flower shrimp nationwide. A reporter from the Gangwon-do Fisheries Newspaper visited us three times and found that we were selling them at extremely high prices to famous hotels and department stores in Seoul. Several years ago, when US President Trump visited Korea, Doha shrimp and prawns were served on the table. Since then, their prices have skyrocketed, reaching prices comparable to diamonds, more expensive than gold.
