Cambridge scientists use AI to develop bird flu vaccine that outperforms current stockpiled jab

Bird flu is spreading in animals around the world and is considered a significant threat to human health. Although some human infections with the North American variants have been mild, other variants in south-east Asia have caused severe disease and high mortality in humans.

A Cambridge team led by Professor Jonathan Heeney has used AI to engineer a new candidate bird flu vaccine that outperforms the jabs currently stockpiled by governments around the world, in case of a human outbreak.

A new successful trial provides further evidence that the team’s ‘plug and play’ approach could be used to create safe, highly effective vaccines for a plethora of infectious diseases threatening human health globally, including Ebola and Marburg viruses, amongst some of the most dangerous human pathogens in the world.

This new class of vaccines not only protect against many variants simultaneously, but may also provide protection against related viruses that have not yet emerged or spilled over into humans.

The technology could be a game changer for pandemic preparedness, health security and national biosecurity.
