Physicists knock at the door of the zeptoverse

Have you ever heard of a zeptometre? It's a trillionth of a billionth of a metre, billions of times smaller than a single atom.

A Cambridge-led team of physicists, working at CERN, have detected an ultra-rare decay of a subatomic particle called a beauty quark, a process which occurs in just one in ten billion beauty quarks.

The way these tiny particles decay could help us understand what new physics might exist at the zeptometre scale.

This strange world, dubbed the zeptoverse, could also be hiding the secrets of dark matter, or help us understand how matter came into being during the Big Bang.
