The production behind Mighty Morphin Power Rangers relied on a genius, low-budget editing trick to pull off their iconic mid-fight costume changes. Since Saban Entertainment bought the action footage directly from the Japanese show Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, the American actors were never actually in the suits during the heavy action scenes. To seamlessly swap an unarmored actor for a fully suited stunt performer mid-fight, the crew used a strict camera lock-off technique. The camera was bolted to a heavy tripod while the actor hit their mark and froze mid-frame. The director would yell freeze, the actor would step out, and a Japanese stunt performer in full spandex would step right into the exact same pose before the crew resumed rolling. Combined with a quick flash of light or an editing dissolve, it gave the optical illusion of an instantaneous, real-time suit transformation right before your eyes.
