South Korea is pushing to make abortion medication accessible to women up to nine weeks pregnant through its healthcare system to promote women's rights and protect them from the risks of illegally distributed drugs.
The government announced Wednesday that the plan will allow doctors to directly prescribe and dispense abortion pills at medical facilities for the first two years and then expand accessibility following reviews of side effects and safety.
The medication will be available starting in the first quarter of 2027.
But national health insurance coverage for the drugs remains undecided.
The move is part of the Lee Jae Myung administration’s policy agenda, which follows the president’s July call to review approving abortion medication.
