허균이 임진왜란 후 금강산으로 향하던 중 철원의 객점에서 만난 한 늙은 아낙의 비참한 사연을 담고 있다. 여성 화자의 목소리를 통해 전란과 유랑, 곤궁 속에서 살아가는 민중의 삶과 회한을 시대상과 연결해 구체적으로 형상화한 작품이다.

이 곡은 작곡가가 21세기의 독자로서 허균의 시를 접하고 받은 감동에서 출발하며, 이에 대한 화답을 음악적으로 형상화하였다. 시가 쓰인 시대와 시가 묘사하는 공간 및 정서에 부합하는 음색과 음률을 고려하여 악기를 편성하였다. 허균의 ‘노객부원’에는 전쟁으로 파괴된 한 여성의 삶이 섬세하고 함축적으로 묘사된다. 작곡가는 허균이 전쟁의 참상을 여성 화자의 목소리로 마주하게 함으로써 당대 소외된 존재들에 대한 공감과 성찰을 이끌어냈다고 해석한다.

The poem recounts the tragic story of an elderly woman Heo encountered at an inn in Cheorwon, while traveling to Mt. Geumgang after the Imjin War. Through the voice of a female speaker, it vividly portrays the lives and sorrows of ordinary people enduring war, displacement, and poverty, situating their experiences within the broader historical realities of the time.

This piece originated in the emotion the composer felt, as a twenty-first-century reader, upon encountering a poem by Heo Gyun. It seeks to give musical form to the experience of reading an old poem as a means of response. The instrumentation, too, reflects the historical period in which the poem was written, along with the timbre and cadence, both of which were composed to harmonize with the spatial setting and emotion the poem evokes. Heo’s An Old Wandering Woman’s Lament portrays, with subtlety and restraint, the life of a woman devastated by war.
