The Dark Side of Halloween Nobody Talks About

Halloween has a dark side that most people never see, and it starts with the costumes, candy, and pumpkins we throw away every year. Around 83% of Halloween costumes have been reported to contain oil-based plastic, while people in the UK discard an estimated 7 million costumes annually, adding to a mountain of waste that can persist for decades or longer. Then there are the pumpkins: roughly 18,000 tonnes reportedly end up in UK landfills each year, where rotting organic waste can release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Even trick-or-treating creates a trail of rubbish, from candy wrappers to cheap decorations, and some low-cost costume products have raised concerns about hazardous substances such as lead and cadmium. Have we lost the real spirit of Halloween beneath all the plastic and waste?
