Saturn’s Moon Enceladus May Be Fit For Earth Life

Scientists have discovered that Enceladus, Saturn’s icy moon, may have the ingredients needed to support life, raising an extraordinary question about whether organisms from Earth could survive in its hidden ocean. Beneath its frozen crust lies a vast ocean of salty water, and plumes shooting into space reveal chemicals that could provide energy for living organisms. Researchers have studied whether Earth microbes could use these resources, but no experiment has proved that scientists have introduced Earth life into Enceladus’s ocean. The idea raises both exciting possibilities and serious concerns, because contaminating another world with Earth microbes could make it harder to determine whether alien life already exists there. Explore the science behind Enceladus’s potentially habitable ocean and discover why this distant moon has become one of the most compelling places to search for life beyond Earth.
