Germany’s Chancellor Merz made the statement after DW’s Nina Haase asked whether he considered US 'civilizational' funds for Europeans an act of political interference.
The US Department has opened applications for grants worth millions of dollars for civil society organizations, NGOs, educational institutions and for-profit groups across Europe aimed at working on issues such as “Western civilization heritage, migration, national sovereignty and free speech". Since the start of US President Trump’s second term, US officials have increased engagement with European populist and nationalist figures, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, through diplomatic outreach and policy initiatives.
