Nail it, whatever you do! The Broad Yoko Ono exhibition

Yoko Ono is a Japanese-born conceptual artist, musician, filmmaker, and peace activist whose work helped shape avant-garde and performance art. Born in Tokyo in 1933, she became active in New York’s experimental art world in the early 1960s and later became globally known through her artistic and personal partnership with John Lennon.
Why she matters
Ono’s art often asks the audience to complete it mentally or physically, making participation, imagination, vulnerability, and peace central themes. MoMA credits her with major contributions across visual art, performance, film, and experimental music.
Her best-known works include:
Cut Piece (1964), a performance in which audience members were invited to cut away pieces of her clothing; it confronts consent, gender, exposure, and spectatorship.

Grapefruit (1964), a book of short “instruction pieces” that turn imagined actions into art.
Wish Tree, an ongoing participatory project inviting visitors to write a wish and attach it to a tree.
Imagine Peace Tower (2007), a light installation in Iceland dedicated to Lennon and intended as a symbol of peace.
