Yoko Ono, The Broad exhibition #artcaster

Yoko Ono (born 1933) is a Japanese-born conceptual artist, performance artist, musician, filmmaker, and peace activist. Although she is widely known as John Lennon’s wife, she is an important independent figure in avant-garde and contemporary art.
Her work often invites the audience to participate, imagine, or reflect rather than simply look at a finished object. Through instructions, performances, installations, sound, and film, she explores themes such as peace, love, violence, women’s bodies, freedom, and healing.
One of her best-known works, Cut Piece (1964), invited audience members to cut away pieces of her clothing with scissors. The performance raises difficult questions about vulnerability, the gaze, and violence toward women. Another important work, Grapefruit (1964), is a collection of poetic instructions that turns the reader’s imagination into part of the artwork.
Yoko Ono is regarded as a pioneering artist because she expanded the meaning of art beyond objects and galleries. Her practice shows that an artwork can be an idea, an action, or a shared moment between the artist and the audience.

작품 세계
요코 오노의 작업은 완성된 물건을 보여 주기보다, 관객이 직접 생각하고 행동하며 작품을 완성하도록 만든다. 그는 짧은 지시문, 퍼포먼스, 설치, 사운드, 영상 등을 통해 “예술은 무엇인가”라는 질문을 일상 속으로 끌어들였다.

그의 작품에는 평화, 사랑, 여성의 몸, 폭력, 자유, 치유라는 주제가 반복된다. 특히 관객과의 관계를 중요하게 여기며, 예술을 감상 대상에 그치지 않고 사회적 대화와 참여의 장으로 확장했다.

〈Cut Piece〉(1964): 관객이 무대 위 작가의 옷을 가위로 조금씩 자르도록 한 퍼포먼스다. 관객의 시선과 행동, 여성 신체를 향한 폭력성과 취약성을 날카롭게 드러낸 작품으로 평가된다. �
