A presidential visit, an honorary professorship, and a friendly game of table tennis!
On October 29, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, visited Peking University during their state visit to China. They were welcomed by Chair of PKU Council He Guangcai 何光彩 and PKU President Gao Song 高松.
President Steinmeier was awarded an honorary professorship in recognition of his longstanding contributions to China-Germany friendship and bilateral cooperation. He also delivered a speech to nearly 300 PKU faculty members and students, sharing his perspectives on China's development, international cooperation, and global challenges.
Beyond the lecture hall, the presidential couple joined a friendly table tennis session at Khoo Teck Puat Sports Complex, the very venue where German table tennis legend Timo Boll won an Olympic medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Joining them were Boll, PKU President Gao Song, Liu Wei, a world table tennis champion and a professor at PKU's Department of PE, and members of the PKU student table tennis team. The participants played in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, exchanging tips and enjoying the game. As a special gift, President Steinmeier received a signed table tennis paddle featuring the signatures of 15 Chinese athletes from PKU's Champion Lecture Hall series.
From academic dialogue to sporting exchanges, the visit offered another opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship and cooperation between China and Germany.
