You can find this statue of Pak Yon at Children’s Grand Park in Seoul 🇰🇷🇳🇱

Born Jan Jansz Weltevree, he and two Dutch compatriots were, as far as we know, the first Dutchmen to arrive in Korea. They ended up on the Korean coast in 1627, and Weltevree never went home. He became known as Pak Yon, married a Korean woman, had children and lived the rest of his life in Korea.

We know much of his story thanks to Hendrick Hamel, another Dutchman who shipwrecked in Korea 26 years later and actually met him.

The statue was made by Dutch sculptor Elly Baltus. The original was unveiled in Weltevree’s hometown of De Rijp in 1988, while this Seoul version followed in 1991.

And this year marks 400 years since Weltevree left the Netherlands for Asia. Pretty wild.

본명은 얀 얀스 벨테브레이(Jan Jansz Weltevree). 그는 두 명의 네덜란드 동료와 함께, 현재까지 알려진 바로는 한국에 온 최초의 네덜란드인들이었습니다. 1627년 조선 해안에 도착한 뒤, 벨테브레이는 결국 네덜란드로 돌아가지 못했습니다. 한국에서는 박연이라는 이름으로 살았고, 조선 여성과 결혼해 자녀도 두었습니다.

그의 이야기가 지금까지 전해지는 데에는 또 다른 네덜란드인, 헨드릭 하멜의 기록이 큰 역할을 했습니다. 하멜은 26년 뒤 조선에 표류했고, 실제로 박연을 만났습니다.

이 동상은 네덜란드 조각가 엘리 발투스(Elly Baltus)의 작품입니다. 원래 동상은 박연의 고향인 네덜란드 더 레이프(De Rijp)에 1988년 세워졌고, 서울의 동상은 1991년에 설치되었습니다.

그리고 올해는 박연이 네덜란드를 떠나 아시아로 향한 지 딱 400년이 되는 해입니다. 생각해 보면 꽤 놀라운 이야기죠.
