19cm짜리 옥수수 자루.
9천 년 전, 이 옥수수의 조상은
겨우 19mm짜리 잡초였습니다.
단 몇 개의 유전자가 바뀌면서
잡초는 인류를 먹여 살리는 거인이 됐고,
대신 인간이 심어주지 않으면
씨앗 하나 퍼뜨리지 못하는 식물이 됐죠.
멕시코 동굴에 층층이 쌓인 화석부터
잉카의 야외 실험실, 유럽을 덮친 펠라그라,
페니실린과 멕시코만의 데드존까지.
인간이 옥수수를 길들인 걸까요,
아니면 옥수수가 인간을 길들인 걸까요?
