Is it a straight line or a circle?

Even though the dots trace a straight line, the whole thing is caused by interesting rotational geometry. Underneath the panel there's a 30-tooth gear rolling around inside a 60-tooth ring gear, exactly twice its size. When a gear rolls inside a ring twice its size, every point on its pitch circle travels in a perfectly straight line, so there's a magnet at each of those points dragging a dot back and forth on top of a solid panel. The circle you see is really just that hidden gear, traced out by eight dots. It's called a Tusi couple.
