In College, she received a USB with an illegal South Korean drama on it while living in North Korea That drama was 개와 늑대의 시간 — Time Between Dog and Wolf, an MBC drama from 2007, starring Lee Joon-gi, Nam Sang-mi and Jung Kyung-ho—and what she saw completely challenged the world she had grown up knowing.
For the first time, she saw South Korean women wearing shorts, growing their hair long, dating freely, and living lives that looked completely different from what she had been taught. By 21, she escaped North Korea.
In this conversation, she shares what everyday life was really like growing up in North Korea, how South Korean media influenced her desire to leave, her journey to freedom, and what surprised her after finally arriving in South Korea.
One of the most interesting things she shared was something I had never really considered: freedom itself can feel burdensome when you've spent your entire life without choices.
In North Korea, so many decisions were made for her. In South Korea, suddenly she had to decide what to study, what career to pursue, where to live, what to buy, and ultimately what kind of life she wanted to create.
She describes it as a beautiful burden—the difficulty of having choices, while also understanding just how precious it is to have them.
Thank you so much to my guest for trusting me with her story. 💚
