Ep.40 [K-NOW] Korea’s 800-Year-Old “Mask Party” Andong Mask Dance Festival

The moment you put on a mask, even the most dignified yangban can turn into a playful trickster.

This week on K-NOW, we head to the 2026 Andong Mask Dance Festival, where centuries-old Korean mask dance traditions come together with masks and performances from around the world.

From Dongnae Yaryu of Busan and Eunyul Talchum from the Hwanghae-do region to Andong’s iconic Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, the festival brings together some of Korea’s most distinctive mask dance traditions.

Through satire, humor, and lively movement, Korean mask dance has long captured the joys, sorrows, and everyday struggles of life. The festival also welcomes performances from countries including Mongolia, Malaysia, Latvia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Lithuania, adding a truly global dimension to the celebration.

And the highlight doesn’t stop there. At the Global Mask Parade, visitors and performers from around the world take to the streets in colorful masks, turning the festival into one big celebration shared by everyone.
