This is the crab auction market at Jukbyeon Port, the birthplace of Uljin crab.
This year, snow crab catches are low, causing fishermen to worry.
Prices range from 5,000 won to 15,000 won per crab.
Larger, meatier crabs are auctioned for around 25,000 won.
When I was young, about 70 years ago, snow crabs were incredibly abundant. Back then, nets were rigged with cotton thread, and fished with wooden boats, using a sled.
You didn't have to go far from land to catch snow crabs. Back then, nets were 1 ja 3 chi.
Now, the sizes have shrunk, leaving many to be desired. Back then, when snow crabs were exported to Japan, a single snow crab weighed over 3 kg. Even 30 years ago, an adult could step on a snow crab without breaking its shell.
Also, king crabs as large as children were caught in large numbers. They resembled Russian king crabs, and were called "butongge."
Now, they are called "Uljin king crabs," and are occasionally caught. They look similar to Russian king crabs.
Distinguish between the two by looking at whether the little toes are hidden or protruding from the body.
The Uljin king crab has its little toes hidden within the body.
