Martino Stierli discusses the student housing buildings at the Universite Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and how their design expresses President Sengor’s concept of negritude, using a pattern of community mindedness exemplified in “concentric communities scaled up one over the other… in a system of reciprocal integration.”
This is a clip from the lecture “Asymmetric Parallelism: Architecture and Politics in Senghor’s Senegal” by Martino Stierli of MoMA, as part of the JCB Memorial Lecture Series, hosted by the the JNBC at Brown University, in March, 2026. Mr. Stierli reported on some of the research towards the exhibition "Architects of Liberation: Modernism in West Africa," which opens at MoMA July 5, 2026.
Curated by History of Art and Architecture Professor Dietrich Neumann, the J. Carter Brown Memorial Lecture Series features contemporary architects from across the country and their work.
