조선 전기, 세종에서 성종에 이르는 여섯 임금을 섬기며 45년 동안 조정에 머문 한 문신이 있었다.

그의 이름은 서거정(徐居正), 호는 사가정(四佳亭).

여섯 살에 시를 지어 장안을 놀라게 한 신동이었고, 스무 살이 되기 전에 진사시에 합격했으며, 스물다섯에 문과에 급제하여 벼슬길에 올랐다.

그는 이후 『경국대전』, 『동국통감』, 『동문선』, 『동국여지승람』 등 조선이라는 나라의 제도와 역사, 문학과 지리를 기록하는 중요한 편찬 사업을 이끌었다.

그러나 이 소설은 그의 업적을 나열하는 이야기가 아니다.

수양대군의 사람으로 살아간다는 것의 무게,
붓 하나로 나라의 말과 글을 세운다는 자부심과 고독,
그리고 평생 몸담았던 자리에서 다음 세대에게 자리를 내주어야 했던 노년의 쓸쓸함.

서거정은 외가인 경기도 임진현에서 태어났지만, 평생 자신의 뿌리인 대구를 ‘내 고향’이라 불렀다.

그리고 고향에서 급제자가 나오기를 기다리고, 마침내 도하(都夏)가 장원급제했을 때 눈물로 시를 지어 보냈다.

In the early Joseon period, there was a scholar-official who served six kings, from King Sejong to King Seongjong, and spent forty-five years in the royal court.

His name was Seo Geo-jeong, and his pen name was Sagajŏng.

A child prodigy who astonished the capital with a poem at the age of six, he passed the lower civil service examination before the age of twenty and entered government service after passing the national examination at twenty-five.

He later played a leading role in compiling major works that formed the intellectual foundations of Joseon, including the Gyeongguk Daejeon, Dongguk Tonggam, Dongmunseon, and Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam.

But this novel is not simply a list of achievements.

It explores the weight of living as a man of Prince Suyang, the pride and loneliness of building a nation’s language and written culture with nothing but a brush, and the quiet loneliness of old age when one must finally make room for the next generation.

Seo Geo-jeong was born in Imjin-hyeon, Gyeonggi Province, through his maternal family, but throughout his life he called Daegu, the home of his roots, his true hometown.

He longed for talented scholars to emerge from his ancestral homeland. When Do Ha eventually achieved first place in the highest examination, Seo Geo-jeong sent him a poem written through tears.

A man who recorded a nation.
A man who built an age through words.
And a man who never forgot his hometown.

Sagajŏng is a historical novel about Seo Geo-jeong’s life, exploring how words can shape an era—and how one man carried his homeland and history within him.

This work follows the historical framework found in royal annals, collected writings, and later records, while the characters’ dialogue, inner thoughts, and certain circumstances have been imaginatively reconstructed for the novel.
