*Executive summary:* The State University of New York (SUNY), the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, partnered with Google Cloud to build the SUNY AI Platform, a one-stop shop for cloud and AI, furthering its mission to double research across its colleges and universities. Underpinned by AI Hypercomputer, the platform provides a secure “front-door” for researchers to access cutting-edge Google AI like Gemini, high performance computing, and specialized AI research tools, while safeguarding proprietary data and intellectual property. Within its first year, the platform delivered clear results for hundreds of researchers: 70% strengthened their position for grants and proposals, 67% achieved significant research acceleration and time savings, and 60% successfully completed a major component of their core research — helping drive more than 80 new projects.
*Challenge:* To achieve its ambitious goal of doubling research across its system, SUNY recognized it would need to invest in research infrastructure, including AI, to fast-track new breakthroughs. However, scaling new technologies to thousands of users required striking a balance between giving researchers the freedom to experiment and protecting their intellectual property and data.
*Solution:* With Google Cloud, SUNY developed the SUNY AI Platform — a system-wide, secure, and scalable ecosystem that provides access to the latest AI technologies, high performance computing, and specialized tools. Rather than struggling to set up tools or, even worse, turning to unvetted solutions that lack governance and security, researchers now have a one-stop shop for the best of Google AI: dedicated workspaces for projects on Gemini, processing power from Google’s AI Hypercomputer, and access to over 200 models in the Model Garden for experimentation. They can also connect to Google-made agents like Gemini Notebook and build their own custom AI workflows with Gemini to speed up their research lifecycle. SUNY is further expanding capabilities with specialized tools like GrantAI, which helps researchers find collaborators and jumpstart proposals. Looking forward, the AI platform will also extend support to highly regulated data — including HIPAA and CMMC — using Google Cloud’s robust security and governance features to establish audit trails and compliance frameworks across its campuses.
*Results:* With this strong foundation in place, SUNY researchers across multiple disciplines — from pharmacy studies and geospatial data to education and computer science — now have more time to focus on addressing the world’s greatest problems.
By the numbers
→ 70% of researchers strengthened their positions for grants and proposals
→ 67% achieved significant time savings and research acceleration
→ 60% successfully completed a major component of their core research
→ 200+ researchers launching more than 80 projects in the first year
*Key takeaways and highlights from our interview with Catherine Stollar Peters, Director of Research Data Strategy in the SUNY Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development:*
→ “We started with building a foundational infrastructure within Google Cloud, and on top of that, we built the SUNY AI portal to make a one-stop shop for researchers that doesn’t require them to be cloud engineers to get their work done.”
→ “For some of them, the work that took days to complete, they were able to complete in a few hours. That allowed them to focus on the work instead of administration and setting up the tools to do the job.”
→ “As we build out this platform more, we plan to bring on new things like HIPAA data or CMC data, all completely possible in Google Cloud. We’re really thrilled to bring this together to democratize AI across the system, making sure that our research and our students are ready for a 21st century world.”
