Apparently even grandparents hugging their grandchildren needed a government-funded consent campaign. A video produced by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre showed grandparents arriving at a family home. One child happily embraces them, while a young girl appears uncomfortable when an older woman attempts to kiss her. The screen then declares: “Not everyone wants a hug. Even from the people who love them.”
The backlash was immediate. Ireland’s justice minister called the advertisement inappropriate, demeaning and counterproductive, saying loving grandparents should be cherished—not campaigned against. The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre removed the video after officials intervened and criticism exploded online. The organization says the scenario repeatedly emerged during consent workshops and that the campaign was intended to encourage healthy boundaries.
The campaign received public funding through Ireland’s statutory domestic and sexual-violence agency, but government officials say they neither created nor approved the advertisement. Nobody passed a law banning grandparents from hugging children. What actually happened is still absurd enough: taxpayer-supported activists produced the video, the government publicly disowned it and the campaign collapsed under the backlash.
