China rescuers race to clear lifeline highway to mudslide-hit Gyirong Port amid secondary hazards

China's emergency rescue forces are working around the clock to clear National Highway G216, the vital lifeline leading to Gyirong Port, Xizang. As of 12:00 p.m. on August 31, repair teams have cleared the route to within 1.1 kilometers of the port. Facing steep slopes, rockfalls, and rising waters that re-submerged 100 meters of newly laid road, crews from China Anneng are using laser-video AI technology to monitor mountain stability while dumping massive stones into raging currents to rebuild the narrow 3-to-5-meter passage.

Upstream water risks are concurrently easing as three barrier lakes—including one downstream of the Prepuchang Zangbo river—have naturally overflowed and essentially drained. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources has identified 8 high-risk geological hazard points across the region, while local power crews operate 24/7 to maintain site illumination and operational safety.

In Gyirong Town, disaster relief and relocation efforts are fully mobilized. Evacuated residents at temporary shelters are receiving complete living essentials from fully stocked emergency reserves, supported by newly arrived psychological aid experts providing continuous emotional care and mental health support.
