Duke students are connecting with Durham through service.
Through Duke’s Community-Engaged Internship and Fellowship Program, students spend the summer working alongside local organizations, gaining hands-on experience while contributing to the Durham community.
Hear from Duke students Claire and Anjini about their work with ECHO and Note in the Pocket, what they’ve learned from the people they’ve met, and how their experiences have helped them see Durham in a new way.

Hi. My name is Claire, and I'm
00:00:14:12 - 00:00:15:12
an intern
00:00:15:12 - 00:00:16:16
from Duke at
00:00:16:18 - 00:00:17:03
Echo,
00:00:17:03 - 00:00:21:05
which is an entrepreneurial community hub of opportunity.
00:00:21:11 - 00:00:22:11
My name is Anjini Mani.
00:00:22:17 - 00:00:26:02
The nonprofit I spent the summer working with is Note in the Pocket.
00:00:26:02 - 00:00:29:02
whose message is clothing children and families with dignity and love.
00:00:29:08 - 00:00:39:27
The internship at Echo really showed me how hard people work to achieve their dreams and everything that's necessary to become a successful business.
00:00:40:00 - 00:00:43:15
it taught me how to think about situations from a different perspective,
00:00:43:20 - 00:00:48:20
Seeing how this community shows up for each other has been a truly great experience for me this summer.
00:00:48:20 - 00:00:52:04
I'd definitely recommend this internship to other Duke students, because
00:00:52:07 - 00:00:58:21
it pairs you up with some organization that has a tangible impact on the community.
00:00:58:24 - 00:01:05:06
Others should feel inspired to get involved because life truly does take a village and we need to be there for our villagers.
00:01:05:06 - 00:01:07:06
This internship has
00:01:07:06 - 00:01:09:21
helped me learn more about
00:01:09:21 - 00:01:12:26
the different businesses that thrive in Durham.
00:01:12:26 - 00:01:16:04
And I feel much more connected to the city now.
