I went on a date with a cute girl -- who couldn't stop crying.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No -- it's not you," she said. "I'm sorry."
Her pasta got salty from her tears.
My friend set me up on the date. When he heard I was single again, he immediately asked his girlfriend, "Which one of your friends is single?"
"They all have boyfriends," she said.
"What about Angie?"
"She just broke up last week."
"Perfect," he smiled, then turned to me. "She's super cute. Great personality. You'll love her."
After the date, I told him she cried all through dinner.
"Don't worry," he said. "My girlfriend has coworkers too."
I pause. "Thanks -- but I think I'm okay."
I don't want his girlfriend to lose her job.
Looking back, he didn't have to set me up. Every excuse was there to say, "Sorry -- I tried." But he made an effort.
Maybe that's what real friends do. They show up for you when you need them most -- before you even ask.
"Allen -- I think I found your next date. Tiffany. You'll love her."
