The Pantheon in Rome has stood for nearly 2,000 years, yet its massive concrete dome was built without modern steel reinforcement.
So how did the Romans make a dome spanning roughly 43 meters without letting its enormous weight destroy the structure?
The secret was not simply making it stronger. The Romans gradually reduced the dome's thickness and weight as it rose higher, used lighter materials near the top, and left a massive opening called the oculus at its center.
But that was only part of the engineering.
From the temporary wooden framework to the changing concrete materials and the curved geometry that carried the forces into the supporting walls, the Pantheon was designed around one crucial idea: control the weight and understand where the forces travel.
Nearly 2,000 years later, the dome is still standing.
This is one of the most remarkable examples of ancient structural engineering.
