China's FAST 'Sky Eye' telescope marks 10 years of discoveries, finding over 1,300 new pulsars

The world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), celebrated its 10th anniversary on September 25. Known locally as the "Sky Eye", this massive silver dish nestled in the mountains of southwest China has found more than 1,300 new pulsars (spinning star remnants), more than all other telescopes in the world combined over the last 10 years.

Data from FAST has powered 13 papers in top journals Science and Nature, with its discoveries repeatedly named among the world's top 10 scientific breakthroughs.

Perfecting their own advanced sensors, engineers now use mostly locally made parts in FAST.

Looking ahead, scientists are already planning FAST 2nd phase, which will add an array of smaller dishes around the main telescope, giving it an even sharper vision to scan the deep universe.
