Lee confessed that back in the 1960s, he was writing and editing so many different Marvel titles simultaneously that he kept forgetting his own characters' names. To save himself, he created a memory cheat code: as long as he could remember a hero's first name, the matching initial instantly tipped him off to the last name.

Even with his clever trick, the system occasionally backfired—most famously when he accidentally referred to Bruce Banner as "Bob Banner" in an issue of The Incredible Hulk, forcing Marvel to officially retcon the hero's full name to Robert Bruce Banner.
