Dan Castellaneta revealed the surprising story behind how Homer Simpson got his iconic voice, and it actually started out as a completely different character impression. When The Simpsons began as short bumpers on The Tracy Ullman Show, Castellaneta initially based Homer’s voice on legendary actor Walter Matthau, giving him a gravelly, slow-pacing growl. However, after doing the voice for long recording sessions, Castellaneta found that forcing the deep Matthau rasp was brutally painful on his throat and didn't give him enough emotional range for fast-paced comedy. To save his vocal cords and make Homer far more expressive, he pitched the voice up, dropped the gruffness, and infused it with more energetic, child-like enthusiasm. On top of that, Homer's famous catchphrase "D'oh!" was improvised by Castellaneta as a speeded-up version of James Finlayson’s annoyed grunt from old Laurel and Hardy comedies. Seeing Dan Castellaneta save his vocal cords by ditching a Walter Matthau impression to accidentally invent Homer Simpson's iconic voice is pure gold. #dancastellaneta #homersimpson #thesimpsons #simpsons #behindthescenes #hollywood #funny #viral #funnymoments #shorts #comedy #interview #latenight #celebritystories
